Welcome to Erfurt – Tips and points of contact
... to the Thuringian state capital - your new home!
Being an Erfurt native and Lord Mayor, Erfurt is not just my home town. For me, it is - and I am proud to say – one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. It is a fantastic place to live.
You will certainly realise this quickly and feel encouraged in your decision to move here. And furthermore, you will also swiftly acknowledge the city’s medieval charm, but at the same time there is always something new, interesting and exciting to discover.
Start looking, explore Erfurt, take the time to get to know the city and its people - it's worth it. Whether the narrow alleys of the city centre, the romantic branches of the River Gera, the garden paradise Egapark, the Petersberg above the rooftops of the city or the zoo park - you'll surely find your favourite place.
Erfurt also offers a lot of history. Our astoundingly beautiful Old Town reveals historical treasures at every corner. Our Jewish heritage with the Old Synagogue, the Mikvah and the Stone House is unique in the world and has held the Unesco World Heritage title since 2023. We have a cathedral hill with a church ensemble that is unrivalled and an impressive background for festivals, markets and concerts that attract visitors from all over Germany. With the Petersberg Citadel, we have a mighty fortress in the centre of the city and our Krämerbrücke is a jewel anyway.
Erfurt offers lots of fun for children. We have many brand new playgrounds as well as innumerable beautiful parks – with the newly designed Geraaue, the largest fully landscaped park in Thuringia. And we are the city of flowers in Germany, nowhere else does it bloom as marvellously as here in Erfurt.
Look forward to all of this – we are delighted that you are now one of us.
Yours
Andreas Horn
Lord Mayor
